Guide 1999”のpp.18-22に掲載されている一覧表の一部であり、その他は、この本に掲載されているデータや情報を大原自身が加工したものである。
注：アバディーン大学のデータは最近のデータと異なっているが、比較の必要から集計においては“The
Times Good University Guide 1999”のデータをそのまま使った。
１．大学ランキング
ひとりの大学人としてはこういったランキングはあまり好きではない。とはいえ、日本の大学ではなく英国の大学のことだし、いずれも国立大学ということもあって基礎知識として知っておいても悪くない。
ランキングは97の大学[注]について、教育（最高を100として250点）、研究（最高を100として150点）、難易度（100点）、教員対学生比（100点）、図書コンピュータ充実度（100点）、施設充実度（100点）、学位授与率（100点）、卒業後の進路（100点）の各項目の合計1,000点満点で行われている。
[注：“The Times Good University Guide 1999”では、私立大学のUniversity
of Buckingham、ほとんどが大学院主体のBusiness SchoolやLaw School、また単科大学などは除外されている。]
さて、総合ランキング上位10大学は次のとおりである。

わがアバディーン大学は36位（723点）だ。35位にはカーディフ（Cardiff）、37位にはイーストアングリア（East
Anglia）が位置している。ちなみに、北星と交流協定を結んでいるリバプールジョンモース大学は74位である。
ロンドン大学に属する大学が４校ランクインしている。ロンドン大学やウェールズ大学は連邦型大学といわれているように、それぞれが独立した権限を持つ大きなカレッジで構成されている。それらのカレッジは他の大学（University）と同等の権利を有している。それらが総称されてロンドン大学あるいはウェールズ大学と呼ばれるのである。
ちなみにロンドン大学傘下のカレッジや機関には次のようなものがある（Eastman
Dental Institute以降の機関は“The Times Good University Guide 1999”では示されていない。またこれらの中には大学院も多く含まれている）。

アバディーン大学は、グラスゴー、セント・アンドリュースに次いでスコットランドで３番目に古く、全英でも５番目に古い大学である。古ければいいというものでもないと思うが、11世紀にオックスフォードが、13世紀にケンブリッジが設立されたというのは驚くばかりである。我がアバディーン大学も1495年の創設だが、小生の頭の中では「イヨクニ（1492）燃えるコロンブス、新大陸発見」という中学校で憶えたフレーズが出てきた。
３．ポリテクニクスから改組転換した大学
ポリテクニクスは、とくに学芸・技術系学問を専門的に学ぶ、大学と同レベルの高等教育機関であった。これが1992年に大学（University）になったのである。下記に示したように、1992年には実に38のポリテクニクスが大学に改組したわけである[注]（1984年のUniv
of Ulsterを除く）[ランキングの数字が同じものもある]。

８．社会人学生が多い大学
ここでの社会人学生とは、21歳以上の年齢で入学した者をさしている。日本と同じようにある種の特典（たとえば入学資格基準を若干下げるなど）があるようである。
下の図を見てわかるように、上位10校とも改組転換組である。しかもルートン大学以外はすべてポリテクニクスからの改組転換によって大学になったところである。
